The liability to your sailboat and you is exactly the same as your safe driving experience, under your command as a safe driver.
The unexpected happens and WHAM, then the unexpected happens in the form of bodily injury to you and your family, others, and law suits.

If one cannot see the value of affordable insurance, then one should not own vehicles, or boats, or houses, or bodily ills, or age!

  My neighbors are like me - similar boats' worth and similar lightning exposure.  Most likely, I am in a different situation than most of the listers.  (BTW, my boat is not listing.  :))  
  I am interested to know the general sense of what the real liability risk is for a sailboat  - under the command of a competent skipper.

    I can see skipping hull insurance, but your exposure if something unexpected happens that harms someone else is worth a long hard look.
