Thanks for that John - seems that your muffler arrangement is the same as
mine with the rusty drain cock and rust around the welded seam at the bottom
of the unit.  I never considered repairing it but will now with this new
info.  As you said, it's not in a very user friendly location.  The
vernalift units that Rick mentioned all have the same I/O diameters so I had
better wait and have a look to make sure.  Thanks again to all for the help.

We have a 3GM and the inlet is 2 inches and outlet 1 1/2 inches.  I just got
done repairing our OEM stainless unit.  Was leaking at drain fitting which
was an old radiator drain cock.  It also had a minor weld bubble not leaking
holes at a weld.  Otherwise, it was in fine shape - not bad for 26 years!!
I replaced the drain cock with a bronze plug, then cleaned and epoxied the
weld bubbles.  The hardest part was getting at the unit to remove and
reinstall it.

There are several manufacturers / suppliers of these mufflers - Google is
your friend

I was just on board Indigo and checked my muffler. I have a 3QM and
the exhaust hoses all appear to be 2" ID. The muffler is a Vernay
unit. Obviously, if yours is rusting, it's not the same unit as on
mine as mine is Vernay unit made of fiberglass or some sort of
polymer. As far as I can determine a good replacement would be a Model
