{Stus-List} Raymarine wheelpilot mounting caution

Don't think this applies to any listers but my friend with a Catalina 309 discovered a possible answer to his recurring Raymarine wheelpilot failure issue.  He found water inside the drive motor.

Seems the installer, a Raymarine dealer, installed it incorrectly.  The Catalina has a square pedestal.  Rather than install the curved pedestal bracket that fits into the back of the wheelpilot's rear ring (the stationary one), the installer drilled a large hole in the aft side of the pedestal and inserted the drive motor case into the hole.  Without the bracket, the motor case was what was anchoring the rear ring.  As the wheelpilot operated, the motor case received all the torque of the operation.  This apparently caused the seal on the motor case to leak.

The boatowner called Raymarine and discussed the installation with them.  Raymarine told him that installing in this manner would void the warranty.

Raymarine is out of the flat brackets so the owner will have one made, bolt it to the back of the pedestal and install it correctly.

If you or any boatowner friends have a similar install, please caution them.
