Conrad, the only reason to want a halyard to exit on a particular side of the mast (especially if it means crossing internally in the mast) is for racing purposes. Picture yourself coming into a common port mark rounding where your boat is on the starboard tack layline and heeled about 20 - 25 degrees. If the spinnaker halyard you wanted to use exited the port side of the mast, the mastman would be down on the lowside of the boat (NOT where you want the weight) trying to raise the spinnaker by jumping that halyard while at the same time trying not to fall off. Much better for him/her to be on the high side of the boat with lots of bracing area to give the leverage needed to get the spinnaker up quickly.

  Thanks all for the replies - Yes I agree I dont like having lines cross - All my halyards are internal and each has its own block and cleat on the foward cabin top except the main which is lead back to the cockpit and shares a winch with the main sheet (each have their own clutches and cleats and the winch is a self-tailer.

  For internal halyards, it depends on which side they exit the mast.  On my 35 the main halyard exits on starboard side of mast and the primary genoa halyard exits on port side.  I have a group of swivel blocks on either side of the mast attached to the mast collar on the deck.  In addition I have 2 spring swivel blocks anchored, one on either side and about a foot forward of the mast, through the deck with substantial backing plates inside the cabin.  I have 4 cabin top winches and 8 lewmar clutches and 2 cleats, for 10 lines lead to the cockpit.



  I try to prevent lines from crossing each other on their way from exiting the mast to their respective blocks at the mast collar and I don’t want them to cross on their way back to the clutches. 



  This works great on my boat.

  Why do you say the primary genoa and spin halyards should be to port? 

  The prim genoa is on starboard on Take Five – that is how she was rigged when I bought her (main is also on port) – spinnaker r is to starboard.

  The boat I race on has main and spin to port and genoa to starboard.

  Even sisterboats may be rigged differently.  A little more info would be helpful.  How many halyards, mast exits per side, mast base turning blocks per side, deck organizers, rope clutches, etc?  Describe what's there now.



  Generally, your primary genoa and spinnaker halyards should exit on the port side of the mast.  Your main halyard is OK on the starboard side.



  Enquiring minds want to know more.

  I am the new owner of a 79 C & C and the mast was down when purchased and I am a little confused about roughting to lines back to the cabin if someone could send photos or give advice I would be greatfull
