Given the number of boats in Maryland, I think massive rioting would
break out if they tried that here!

And in beautiful California it's 7.75% at purchase and 1% per year
forever after.

You pay tax just like buying a car, a light bulb, or a lawnmower. It is
X% of the purchase price and you pay it once. Our tax was 5% for ages
but it might be 6% now - can't recall.

Just to be absolutely clear, when I buy a boat in Maryland, and home
port it there, I would pay the sales taxe and the excise tax on the
purchase price???
Thanks for the help.

I have the same question. If I buy a boat in MD, and leave it there,
Do I pay the excise tax.
Is there personal property tax on boats in MD. If so what is the rate.
thanks

Tom,
If the transaction takes place in MD, does the state charge a sales tax
and waive the excise tax?

Brad,
The State of Maryland does not put a sales tax on the boat you bought
out of state. They do have a 5% Excise Tax of Purchase Price. They give
you credit for a Trade-in on the Net Purchase Price. They have a Title
Fee of $2.00 and a Registration Fee of $24.00 for 2 Years. The nearest
office is in Bel Air and their number is 410-836-4550.
