Rich, You need to see the tool we made, I'll send photos off line because
the file is too large and I don't think Stu posted the photos last year when
I sent them to him.

How come, if you have the prop off, you would push the bearing forward and
cut it off the shaft with a grinder rather than simply push it aft and let
it slip off the shaft? That's where the new one goes on....

Rich.

I think the usual way to replace the cutlass bearing is to remove the prop
and leave the shaft in place. Use a pusher to push the cutlass bearing
forward on the shaft and out of the strut. Then use and angle grinder to
cut the cutlass bearing length wise and remove it from the shaft. The same
pusher can be used to set the new cutlass bearing in place in the strut and
then reinstall the prop. You can get a special made tool or you can
fabricate one yourself whichever is easier. A puller is required to remove
the prop.

With that said, I am not sure you need to replace the cutlass bearing if the
play is only 20 thou, doesn't seem like a lot of play to be but I never
checked a cutlass bearing by measurement, more by the feel of the prop shaft
as I push it hard from side to side. You should easily be able to decide if
the bearing is in need of replacement by doing that.

Hi guys and gals

I have my 34 on the hard doing bottom paint and 2 thru hulls. My cuttless
bearing has probably about 20 thousand's play and there is lots of meat
left in the bearing itself. I asked the machanic at the marina how much to
replace it and he said atleast 2 hours at 100 per hour and a hundred for the
bearing. He also said the bearing may not come out and then of course we
would have to pull the shaft and that would be much more. So im going to put
it off till next haul out in 2 years. My question is whats the chances that
i won't be able to get it out with a puller and have to pull the shaft.
Which I believe means pulling the rudder as well.

Mitch
