If you keep that area dry, there should be no rot and thus no need to fix. I placed a bilge pump at the lowest part of the bilge (right under the mast (and step)) to help.

I thought that maybe all the C&C boats of the early to mid 70’s that had keel stepped masts were made the same in that area and that it was the wood underneath that was the issue…I can’t tell if the fiberglass is structural and possibly part of an athwart ship stringer…I remember something about someone on this list drilling a hole through the fiberglass to get an idea of the state of underlying wood…dry, wet, rotten, not there or??? But I am not ready to do that yet just to find out…it’s still seems good so I won’t fix it!!!

    No problem yet, that I can see.  My step is wrapped in Fiberglas, so it's hard to tell until catastrophic failure.

    Does anyone know if the mast step on the 35 MKII is prone to the same type of problems that people have been reporting about the 30 MKI and 35 MKI?  My boat is a 1974 model and I can’t see any evidence of repair so I guess it is original.  Water from the shower gets past it on its way to the bilge because the boat was built to drain that way and the bilge often has an inch or so of water in it from rain down the mast or the stuffing box so it must get wet.  Still seems solid and the shrouds hold tension.  A few years ago I removed the uppermost aluminum casting and cleaned it and repaired some corrosion pitting with reinforced epoxy and painted flat black with a couple of coats of Tremclad , bedded the keel bolts and reinstalled.  The boat has been stored mast in for the last two winters.

    Important advice for anyone attempting a mast step repair.  Measure everything!!!  Measure it using a good reference point or points.  If your mast step has subsided, you will have to look a the mast at the collar or partners to determine how much and adjust your measurements accordingly.



    I placed duct tape on the cabin sole around the mast and made reference marks for fore/aft and athwartships positioning of the mast and stepping box.  I also measured to cabinets, etc, in case the tape moved or disappeared.  Again, measure everything!!!!!



    Take pictures.



    Most important measurement is the height of the floor of the mast stepping box (i.e. the height of the bottom of the mast).



    I had a new mast stepping box made.  It was just 4 pieces of 2x2 aluminum angle welded together.



    Make sure you leave a limber hole(S) or conduit(S) for the passage of bilge water fore/aft.



    The mast step on Touche' is solid glass.  No wood.  I spanned the bilge sump and then laid glass until the final elevation was reached.
