My experience with wheel covers has been good. I installed my own on a 36
inch diameter wheel in about 6 hours of sewing but I learned a real nice
stitch and I got a good feeling of accomplishment from the task so the work
wasn't bad. I did it during winter when I had some time on my hands. I
leave the wheel unprotected and on my boat all season long, usually mid May
until mid October and after about 4 years it still looks new and feels new
too. I have to be careful not to stain it with greasy hands because it is
light grey suede and would look bad if I got grease on it. It takes rain
and sun and has lasted very well. It was sold as an elk hide wheel
cover.mine has only one seam all the way round and I use that to mark top
dead center and cover it with a wider strip of black vinyl that came with
the kit. I got mine at the Binnacle in Halifax. I think it was this one
but I know that mine was elk hide.not sure about this one they just say boat
leather.

Subject: {Stus-List} Leather Wheel Cover

My wife asked me what I wanted for Frolic II , C&C 36', this past Christmas
and I suggested a leather wheel cover. I had met a vendor at the Annapolis
Boat show this year that impressed me and the cover was ordered through Boat
Leather out of Seattle WA. I provided the measurements and received the
cover a week before Christmas. I was looking forward to a project at home
for the month of January and the leather wheel cover fit the bill,
unfortunately I had measured the diameter of the wheel incorrectly, it was
approximately 1/8" too wide. I contacted Boat Leather and he shipped me
another cover that day at no cost. The origional was returned. The actual
time of sewing the wheel cover on the wheel was about 5 hours. It looks
absolutely great to me. It is recommended to cover the wheel, I guess I need
to have a cover made for the wheel and binnacle. I saved some money by doing
it myself and got a lot of self satisfaction.
