Tim -

Is the cap something that's available at any auto parts store?

I had that happen. The pressure cap was the culprit. It needs a vacuum to pull coolant back, rather than air through the cap. A new gasket might help, but I got a new cap.

Have the pressure cap checked, also is there a leak in the heat exchanger, a friend had a similar experience when he had a leak there.

I just eye-balled the distance, but the top of the engine (yanmar 3HMF) coolant reservoir is mounted on a side wall a couple inches below the top of the engine. In the past I have not noticed any issues, but this past season I have been adding coolant to the engine and it continues to fill the reservoir. It appears the coolant is not being pulled back to the engine as the engine cools and consequently the reservoir is just filling up.

The connecting tube is clear and the engine cap is tight, though I suspect its leaking air. Any other thoughts on why coolant is not coming back in the engine from the reservoir?

Will mounting the reservoir higher help or hurt?

I’m getting tired of the ice discussion and am hoping this distracts the list for a while.

Thanks,
